SIDE TABLE MAKEOVER

SIDE TABLE MAKEOVER

We were on a very tight budget for my niece’s room especially for a complete makeover. The only thing we were keeping was her dresser. So in order to save money my husband and I decided to give this side table a makeover. In the end we spent $40 for paint, stain and new knobs. Below I have included a before picture of the side table.

First thing we did was remove the old knobs and wipe down the side table with a degreaser (Krud Kutter is what we used). Then we sanded the top down to the original wood in order to stain it a natural wood finish. We did sand some of the bottom portion were it really needed it. After sanding we painted the bottom portion Moscow Nights by Sherwin Williams. We ended up having to do three coats. We then stained the top which was the most time consuming because it takes a while to dry between coats. We did only two coats of stain on the top.

I then found these perfect rattan knobs at Hobby Lobby which really added the finishing touch. Overall we are very pleased with how it turned out. My niece did not even realize it was the same piece of furniture. I will say this was definitely one of our easier makeovers.

Dark and Moody Boho Teen Bedroom Reveal

Dark and Moody Boho Teen Bedroom Reveal

We finally finished my niece’s bedroom just in time for her Birthday. We started the process of designing her room on Pinterest trying to decide what Style she really liked. Once she picked out a Boho theme that would be dark and moody we went to Sherwin Williams and picked out paint colors. We chose Blue Peacock for the accent wall and Snowbound for the other 3 walls. We got Moscow Nights for the headboard and the side table that I redid. Next week I am going to share both DIYs for the headboard and side table.

Our color palette at this point was teal, navy and white but I really wanted to add in some mauve. My niece does not like pink but she loved the deep color of the mauve. We picked out the cutest navy fur bedding and added a sweet mauve throw pillow. My niece did not want a bed that was hard to makeup so I kept things simple. She also wanted an area to do her hair and makeup so I got this super affordable desk at Ikea and the cute mauve velvet stool off of amazon. The mirror was our favorite though. As soon as I saw it at Target I knew we had to have it in her room. Originally I wanted to put it over the bed but since she needed a makeup spot I decided the mirror over the desk was best. We found this moon wall décor at Homegoods which turned out perfect over the bed.

I then ordered these gorgeous velvet drapes in dusty rose (which is mauve by a different name). The bookcase and reading area are by far her favorite. We did not spend much on the bookcase since we were redoing the entire room. We got this adorable chair at Target from the Studio McGee collection but we had to have a pouf so she could prop her feet up to read. We also added soft lighting where ever we could. I added fairy lights to the headboard, LED strip lights to the back of the bookcase and the cute “Hello” light up sign. My niece loves to sit in her room with just these lights on and listen to her music. This may have been one of the funniest room makeovers I have ever done. This is not a style that I am familiar with but I loved stepping outside of my comfort zone.

I hope you like the final product as much as my niece!

Recent Home Décor Inspiration

Recent Home Décor Inspiration

Today I wanted to share some of my favorite inspirations from Instagram. I like to save photos that inspire me to make a change in my own home. I have three picks below that I plan to implement in my home over the next month.

HOME DECOR INSPIRATION FROM NINE & SIXTEEN

My first pick is from Tessa Foley at Nine and Sixteen. I want to add a rattan or woven bar cart to my dining area to store all my tablecloths and napkins. this is such a simple little corner she has created but it adds such a touch of cozy to her home. I found a great alternative to many of the super pricey rattan bar arts that I am going to order later this week. I have it pictured below. If you scroll through Tessa’s Instagram or her website you will see all the beautiful tablescapes she creates with her gorgeous tablecloths and napkins. As mush as I love them they are a little out of my price range so I have found some affordable alternatives I have shared below. Once my accent table comes in I will share my photos.

HOME DECOR INSPIRATION FROM MANDY ENO HOME

This next pick is from Mandy Eno Home Instagram account. She does not have a website but is prolific on Instagram and Pinterest. I love the cozy feel of her home. She does an amazing job of missing traditionally with the current trends. I have an pothecary chest that I am not really loving at the moment but as soon as I saw this picture I knew exactly what I wanted to do to fix my chest. I am ordering similar knobs but I went with a brushed brass look. You can see the options below as well as clicking on the link to be directed to the website. I also think I am going to change out my white shade for a black one.

HOME DECOR INSPIRATION FROM FLORA AND FONT

My last pick is from Flora and Font on Instagram. She also has a great print shop on Etsy Flora and Font. I love this tree print in the brass frame and want to put it in my home over the rattan accent table I mentioned above.

Chair Makeover

Chair Makeover

My parents found this beautiful Chippendale chair at an estate sale for only $25. My mom let me have it since she knew we would be able to give it a little love and attention. First we had to fix the spindles because they were coming loose. We did this with wood glue and clamps. Then came a lot of sanding and wood putty to fill in any areas that were damaged. Then more sanding! Next my husband had to make a seat since there was not one. He did this by cutting out a piece of plywood to the fit in the seat frame which was still intact. We then used Pure Foam Cushion from Michaels. We used two layers to make the chair extra soft. I found some great fabric on Esty (pictured above but no longer for sale) which we used to cover the foam and using a staple gun we secured it to the bottom of the plywood seat. We then used a white lacquer spray paint before securing the cushion seat. I absolutely love this chair and including the original price it only cost us $50. I have a before picture below but we had already started the process in this photo. You can get a general idea about how it looked when my parents purchased it.

Dark and Moody Boho Teen Room

Dark and Moody Boho Teen Room

My niece and I are in the process of redoing her room. She is now 13 so wants a more mature room. We looked at lots of images on Pinterest and she decided she loved all the dark and moody rooms. She also really loved all the Boho accessories that have gotten popular. We have a very limited budget so we are going to work with what we have as much as possible. Below are some of the items we found in our search to create the perfect space for her. I will continue to update you on the progress as we go. Last weekend I shared our paint color selections on Instagram so if you missed it we picked Blue Peacock, Moscow Nights and Snowbound all by Sherwin Williams.

Accessorizing your home can make such an impact!

Accessorizing your home can make such an impact!

My sister just got a new dresser in her bedroom and she had not styled it at all. She said it made the room feel empty so we went shopping! We wanted to keep the budget down so we went to Target and Home Goods for all our purchases. Below I have included a before picture so you can get the “empty” feel for the space.

My sister had only one request for how I styled the dresser. She knew she wanted to have a group of pictures that could be leaning and overlapping to give the dresser a layered look. She already had a sweet framed picture of my dad and grandmother. Also last year I bought her this tree sketch from Target. So we added two more prints from Home Goods. I always love a nude for the bedroom and this one was perfect for only $30. I also got the small floral print from Home Goods for only $10.

My sister loves Joanna Gaines so we picked up two of her books from Target to add some more layers to the space. I then got this cute rattan box and vase from the Studio McGee collection at Target. To finish the chest off I cut some stems from her yard to keep the price down. Now that the dresser is styled the room feels complete and cozy.

Happy Styling!

LET’S TALK COMPROMISE – PART 3

LET’S TALK COMPROMISE – PART 3

We finally came to an agreement on the throw pillow and blanket situation. Personally I think we both won! I purchased a duvet set that was really soft and comfy. My nephew does not even realize the shams are more decorative then functional so he sleeps with them. Now that he doesn’t classify the shams as throw pillows I was able to add two more pillows. Happy Aunt and happy nephew! It probably helped my case that the leather pillow from target is very soft and squishy so he can comfortably lay on it. As you can tell I kept his bedding simple and relaxed so he can easily make it up himself. If you cannot tell from the pictures my nephew’s favorite things in life are football, gaming, history and more football. I found these great prints of the LSU’s stadium and surprised him with them.

The Chair! I have absolutely no problem with this chair. I love the color and it is so comfy. The leather is soft and broken in but this chair is HUGE. It may not look it in the pictures but trust me I had a time moving it to that corner. Not only is it huge but for some reason my nephew wanted it in the center of the room. When we built the desk and added in the dresser I had to rearrange everything so it would fit and this is when I took my chance…I shoved it in the corner and said nothing. Surprisingly it is still in the corner so fingers crossed.

Overall, I am pleased with how his room turned out. The room is an expression of who he is and gives him a space that is all his. Every detail of this room is about him and for him which is why this is one of my favorite projects. I think allowing our kids the freedom to make their own choices is wonderful even if it is as simple as designing their own room.

NEW OLIVE STEMS

NEW OLIVE STEMS

I just got in these Faux Olive Stems and had to share them! They are only $16 for 5 full large stems. I cannot get over the quality. These will be a staple in my home. In the picture above I added in 3 small olive stems I had from target. These little stems have a few small olives on them but I love using these stems alone as well. These stems will also make for great greenery in other arrangements. Click on link below if you are interested!

LET’S TALK COMPROMISE – PART 2

LET’S TALK COMPROMISE – PART 2

Sometimes we have to work with what we have especially when on a budget. My sister was given this dresser for free so we made it work for my nephew’s room. I first cleaned it inside and out then lightly sanded it and painted it with Sherwin Williams Naval. It really was that easy. We also got some “masculine” brass handles to add a little contrast.

Once I had finished the dresser I decided to just give in and put his posters over the dresser. Since I compromised he allowed me to style the dresser. This was huge because he did not want me to put one single item on his dresser. I promised him not to go overboard and just added a few items from Target. I even snuck in a candle!! He would never admit it but I think he likes the way I styled it…simple and still room for his “stuff.”

Now If I can get hold of the poster wall and rearrange them the way I want I will be super excited but I am not holding my breath on this one. I was planning to share the rest of his room in this post but since we are having artistic difference it may have to wait. He believes throw pillows are the worst idea ever! He also is determined to have no throw blankets. I did get a chance to move his HUGE navy leather armchair he adores. I will admit it is so comfy but rather large for the space. Just being allowed to move it out of the center of the room was a big win for me so I will take it.

Hope you have a great day!

Swim Coverup/Wicker Chain/Isola Filicudi, Italy/Death Comes to Pemberley/Vanilla Bean Biscotti

Happy Friday! I am sharing my FRIYAY 5 today which is a combination of my 5 favorite things from the week whether it is fashion, design, beauty, travel, home décor or a book!

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click HERE to read my full disclosure policy.

Swim Coverup

I love this swimsuit cover up. I am always self conscious about my legs so I got this skirt a little oversized so that there was no gap in the fabric. I love wearing this to the pool because it gives me so much confidence! It was a little long on me but I am only 5’4″. I have worn it 3 times up to the pool and it has held up after washing. I did dry it the first time hoping it would shrink a little in the length but I have mainly let it dry on my rack.

Wicker Chain

I just got my wicker chain in the mail and I love it. Below I have a picture of it on my coffee table. I am still trying to decide if I want to keep it on the coffee table because my son says it is in his way! He thinks the entire family room is nothing but a playroom for his army men. Either way I love it and have already thought of so many fun ways to style with it.

Isola Filicudi, Italy

I love to research travel and new places for our family to visit. My husband does not like crowds so when I saw this island, Filicudi which lies northeast of Sicily, I knew this would be a destination he would enjoy. I found some great articles about island but my favorite description was on the Visit Sicily website…”little wild and worldly, ideal for those looking for the intensity of the essentials and who love unpolluted nature. The three population inhabited centres of Filicudi are: Filicudi Porto, Valdichiesa and Pecorini a Mare, joined together by a very picturesque street. Livelihood here centres around tourism and the cultivation of capers and figs, which are the basic ingredients of the local cuisine.”

Death Comes to Pemberley

I adore Jane Austen and I went through a phase where I would read anything that even attempted to imitate her work and style. I however would not recommend a lot of these books to others because in all honestly most where not that great. I however would recommend this novel. I like that the author did not try to recreate the story but instead just took well know characters I love and used them in a genre I adore…mysteries! I also appreciate PD James writing style. My favorite PD James book is Mistletoe Murders. This is also a three part mini series that aired on Masterpiece and is currently on amazon.

Vanilla Bean Biscotti

My daughter and I made this delicious recipe the other night and we just had to share it! The recipe is super easy and the end result is so fantastic! If you have ever had the already made version wrapped in plastic and did not like them then give this recipe a try! Homemade and fresh is no comparison to the premade. Below is a picture of the batch we made. You can tell we dripped the icing over the entire biscotti instead of having it all in one bite. My kids dipped their biscotti in tea and chocolate while my husband and I enjoyed them with our morning coffee.

I hope you enjoyed my weekly picks! Have a great weekend!

Beach Dinner

Beach Dinner

Is anyone else ready for a summer vacation to the beach! Our family is counting down the days until we leave for the beach…only 2 more days left!!! My husband grew up around the Alabama Coast and always craves being on the water. With the beach on our minds we had a Saturday night beach party. It all started with the lobster from Costco.

Our kids love seafood as much as we do so I try to incorporate it into our menu once a week. Since we love to eat outside I thought I would make a special table for us to celebrate Saturday Night. My daughter and I found these pink and blue plates at Hobby Lobby. We knew we had to buy them because pink is her favorite color and blue is mine so it was meant to be! We then headed to Kirkland’s and purchased lots of the cane wrapped items. This meal turned into several hours of eating, drinking wine (adults only) and discussing our next family trip! My son has decided on London because he is obsessed with history. My husband and daughter want to go to Greece. I think I will be able to talk my son around to Greece when I show him how much Athens has to offer him.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures of our preppy beach themed tablescape as much as we did! If you are interest in any of the items pictured above click on the images below to be directed to the website.

Bon Appetit,

Let’s Talk COMPROMISE!

Let’s Talk COMPROMISE!

I did a bedroom makeover for my nephew who is now 15 and in high school. I will say this was hands down the hardest room I have ever redone. My nephew had to have a say in every single item I chose. I told him from the beginning that it was his room and I would not force anything on him. He had several specific request for me. The first and most important was that he NEEDED a gaming desk! He also wanted to put up a Saints flag he has had since he was young and he wanted posters. We ended up with a process that worked well for he and I. I chose colors, bedding, décor, etc. and he had veto power. In the end we came up with a room he loved which was my only goal. Though there are definitely things I would change about the room the only thing that really matters was my nephew was happy.

We started first with the wall color. He immediately agreed to a light grey color and allowed me to pick whichever I thought would look best. I decided on Light French Grey by Sherwin Williams and was very pleased with outcome. It is very light and really brightened up his room. I also bought some great LED Light Strips that attach to the back of his screen so the lights reflect well off the light grey wall color. Everything on his shelves are items he already had and wanted me to display. He is big into sports and history. We managed to get it all up without looking too cramped. I gave him this gamer chair a few years ago for his birthday. It is not the most attractive thing but he says it is really comfortable. Next week I will share the dresser makeover we did for his room along with pictures of the entire room.

See you next week for the my nephew’s room reveal.

THE BOOKSHOP ON THE SHORE/SCALLOPED JUST RUG/PORTREE, SCOTLAND/LEMON VINAIGRETTE/SWIMSUIT COVERUP

Happy Friday! I am sharing my FRIYAY 5 today which is a combination of my 5 favorite things from the week whether it is fashion, design, beauty, travel, home décor or a book!

THE BOOKSHOP ON THE SHORE

BY JENNY COLGAN

Whenever I want an indulgent read that is short and sweet I always go for a Jenny Colgan book. Her books always make me happy and take me away to another place…Scotland! She is so great at drawing you in with her beautiful descriptions of her home country. I will say I am not always in the mood for a romance book but when I am Jenny Colgan is one of my go to authors. This is a sweet book about a single mom who just needs a little help and she finds just what she is looking for in a small quaint Scottish town.

SCALLOPED JUTE RUG

I saw this scalloped jute rug on the Harlowe James website and feel in love. If you have never looked at her site you should try it out. I love all her great vintage finds too. I like the idea of getting this adorable rug in the small size to use as a mat either in my Kitchen or in my guest bathroom. I like buying from small shops on Esty so this is a win win all around.

PORTREE, SCOTLAND

Scotland has been on my bucket list since I was in college. My husband and I went to London for a short 6 day trip and I really wanted to add on some time to travel to Edinburgh if nothing else but sadly we could not make it happen. I am trying to now plan a Scotland and Ireland trip for all 4 of us. I think my kids will love it. They are great travelers and love experiencing new things. They are also always willing to try new foods which makes travel with them even more fun. They are happy in a Michelin Star Restaurant or a dive. My kids get just as much enjoyment from an incredible meal as my husband and I do. Our kids favorite meal is going to a local Spanish restaurant for escargot and paella then walking down the street to our favorite coffee shop for some Gelato.

LEMON VINAIGRETTE

I absolutely LOVE this vinaigrette!! I use it in salads, on some orzo pasta with a sprinkle of parmesan, or as a chicken marinade for the grill. This is such a versatile recipe. I always have the ingredients on hand so it is handy to have on those weeknights when I cannot find inspiration to whip up something. I include the honey or maple syrup and the dried thyme even though she says it is optional. I cannot recommend this recipe enough!

SWIMSUIT COVERUP

I am always on the hunt for a good coverup so when I saw this best seller on Amazon I had to order it. I loved it so much I told my twin sister who ordered it as well. I like that it fits loose and longer in the back to cover up the back of my thighs.

I hope you enjoyed my weekly picks! Have a great weekend!

Summer Grilling

I am sure you have noticed how much I love creating different tablescapes, whether for a holiday or just an everyday meal. I think a beautiful and fun can add so much to the enjoyment of an everyday meal. Whenever I feel myself getting in a rut from the everyday routine I just bring out my favorite plates and linens then add some flowers and candles. It always does the trick. I used all things I already owned except for the placemats and napkins which are a new purchase from amazon.

I think a tablescape is never finished with out some flowers (fresh or faux) and candles. Since we eat outside often I buy these Pillar Citronelle candles at Target. I used my new favorite Vase which I made using a little navy spray paint and some painter’s tape. The flowers are fake since this was a last minute idea but I think they still look beautiful.

My husbands always enjoys grilling and my daughter’s favorite is barbeque chicken. Brandon does a simple mix of spicy mustard and molasses on the chicken prior to grilling. Once on the grill he puts the chicken over direct heat for 15 to 25 minutes. Once he moves the chicken off the direct heat he baste the chicken with BBQ sauces and lets cook for another 30 minutes. Once he removes the chicken from the grill he covers then chicken and lets it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Brandon’s favorite barbeque sauce to use is Lillie’s Smokey BBQ which I purchase at Fresh Market. his chicken turns out perfect every time. My favorite veggie to grill is corn and since my kids love it too we often do this combo for dinners.

Hope you enjoyed our Summer Tablescape and Grilling ideas! I have linked some of the new purchases below so just click on the image and it will direct you to the website.

MEDITERRANEAN CHOPPED SALAD/VILLA SAN GIACOMO/TERRACOTTA BOWL

SURF SHACK/RATTAN TOTE

Happy Friday! I am sharing my FRIYAY 5 today which is a combination of my 5 favorite things from the week whether it is fashion, design, beauty, travel, home décor or a book!

MEDITERRANEAN CHOPPED SALAD

Our family loves a delicious salad and this one nailed it. Isn’t it just gorgeous with all the colors! The dressing really clinches the deal though. I did have to take out the tomatoes since I am the only one who likes them. I used a block of feta and cut it into big hunks because that is the way my children love it. We paired this recipe with a a Greek marinated chicken.

VILLA SAN GIACOMO

The Amalfi Coast is at the top of my travel list so when I came across this gorgeous villa hotel I had to share. The views are incredible and the rooms are luxurious. I am not sure much else needs to be said!!!

TERRACOTTA BOWL

I love anything for my kitchen that is unique and eye catching. I love neutrals so this bowl really checks off all my must haves for kitchen décor. I love all tableware that I can not only use but display as well!

SURF SHACK

I love home décor with a beach vibe. My husband grew up near the beach and loves going at least once a year to one beach or another. I not only love the home décor ideas but it is such a pretty book to put on display.

RATTAN TOTE

I adore the simplicity and shape of this bag. I plan to use it as a handbag but also as a beach tote! It is not big enough for me to use when I have my kids but it is perfect for a weekend beach trip with just the hubby!

I hope you enjoyed my weekly picks! Have a great weekend!
