ENTRYWAY ADDITIONS

I made two small changes to my entryway but I feel like they really elevated the space. I actually did not like the apothecary chest but just adding the brass knobs made me fall in love with this piece. I also changed out the white lamp shade for a black lamp shade. I feel like this new addition really added some much need warmth to this little corner. I will admit our entryway was not an area of my home that I really liked before but now I think it looks so cozy.

Dark and Moody Boho Teen Room

My niece and I are in the process of redoing her room. She is now 13 so wants a more mature room. We looked at lots of images on Pinterest and she decided she loved all the dark and moody rooms. She also really loved all the Boho accessories that have gotten popular. We have a very limited budget so we are going to work with what we have as much as possible. Below are some of the items we found in our search to create the perfect space for her. I will continue to update you on the progress as we go. NEW OLIVE STEMS

NEW OLIVE STEMS

I just got in these Faux Olive Stems and had to share them! They are only $16 for 5 full large stems. I cannot get over the quality. These will be a staple in my home. In the picture above I added in 3 small olive stems I had from target. These little stems have a few small olives on them but I love using these stems alone as well. Swim Coverup

I love this swimsuit cover up. I am always self conscious about my legs so I got this skirt a little oversized so that there was no gap in the fabric. I love wearing this to the pool because it gives me so much confidence! It was a little long on me but I am only 5’4″. I have worn it 3 times up to the pool and it has held up after washing. I did dry it the first time hoping it would shrink a little in the length but I have mainly let it dry on my rack.

Wicker Chain

I just got my wicker chain in the mail and I love it. Below I have a picture of it on my coffee table. I am still trying to decide if I want to keep it on the coffee table because my son says it is in his way! He thinks the entire family room is nothing but a playroom for his army men. Either way I love it and have already thought of so many fun ways to style with it.

Isola Filicudi, Italy

I love to research travel and new places for our family to visit. My husband does not like crowds so when I saw this island, Filicudi which lies northeast of Sicily, I knew this would be a destination he would enjoy. I found some great articles about island but my favorite description was on the Visit Sicily website…”little wild and worldly, ideal for those looking for the intensity of the essentials and who love unpolluted nature. The three population inhabited centres of Filicudi are: Filicudi Porto, Valdichiesa and Pecorini a Mare, joined together by a very picturesque street. Livelihood here centres around tourism and the cultivation of capers and figs, which are the basic ingredients of the local cuisine.”

Death Comes to Pemberley

I adore Jane Austen and I went through a phase where I would read anything that even attempted to imitate her work and style. I however would not recommend a lot of these books to others because in all honestly most where not that great. I however would recommend this novel. I like that the author did not try to recreate the story but instead just took well know characters I love and used them in a genre I adore…mysteries! I also appreciate PD James writing style. My favorite PD James book is Mistletoe Murders. This is also a three part mini series that aired on Masterpiece and is currently on amazon.

Vanilla Bean Biscotti

My daughter and I made this delicious recipe the other night and we just had to share it! The recipe is super easy and the end result is so fantastic! If you have ever had the already made version wrapped in plastic and did not like them then give this recipe a try! Homemade and fresh is no comparison to the premade. Below is a picture of the batch we made. You can tell we dripped the icing over the entire biscotti instead of having it all in one bite. My kids dipped their biscotti in tea and chocolate while my husband and I enjoyed them with our morning coffee.

I am sure you have noticed how much I love creating different tablescapes, whether for a holiday or just an everyday meal. I think a beautiful and fun can add so much to the enjoyment of an everyday meal. Whenever I feel myself getting in a rut from the everyday routine I just bring out my favorite plates and linens then add some flowers and candles. It always does the trick. I used all things I already owned except for the placemats and napkins which are a new purchase from amazon.

I think a tablescape is never finished with out some flowers (fresh or faux) and candles. Since we eat outside often I buy these Pillar Citronelle candles at Target. I used my new favorite Vase which I made using a little navy spray paint and some painter’s tape. The flowers are fake since this was a last minute idea but I think they still look beautiful.

My husbands always enjoys grilling and my daughter’s favorite is barbeque chicken. Brandon does a simple mix of spicy mustard and molasses on the chicken prior to grilling. Once on the grill he puts the chicken over direct heat for 15 to 25 minutes. Once he moves the chicken off the direct heat he baste the chicken with BBQ sauces and lets cook for another 30 minutes. Once he removes the chicken from the grill he covers then chicken and lets it rest for 5 to 10 minutes. Brandon’s favorite barbeque sauce to use is Lillie’s Smokey BBQ which I purchase at Fresh Market. his chicken turns out perfect every time. My favorite veggie to grill is corn and since my kids love it too we often do this combo for dinners.

Every chance our family gets we eat outside. We have a great outdoor space under a pergola that is covered in beautiful star jasmine. We added an outdoor fan and string lights to create the perfect atmosphere. On Sunday nights I often make roast chicken and my family loves it. I have tried out several great recipes and finally created my own that is perfect for our entire family! Below I have shared my roast chicken and vegetables recipe. I also created a simple and fun outdoor summer tablescape.

I found the cutest faux orange potted plants at Target. I then created an orange inspired arrangement with fresh cuties, moss stones and palm steams. I used my everyday great white plates from pottery barn and my blue scalloped salad plates from William Sonoma with these simple wood chargers from world market. I really enjoy going all out for our Sunday night dinners. I feel like it starts our week off right.

ROAST CHICKEN RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

3 – 5 pounds Whole Chicken

4-5 medium carrots, chopped in large chunks

4 celery stalks, chopped in large chunks

1 onion, chopped in large chunks

8 garlic cloves

16 thyme springs

2-3 tablespoons olive oil

1 lemon. quartered

2 tablespoons butter, melted

salt and pepper

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Then combine carrots, celery, onion, 4 garlic cloves, 8 thyme springs, and 2 – 3 tablespoons of olive oil in a mixing bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste and place vegetable mix in the bottom of a 9×13 greased dish.
  2. Rinse whole chicken and pat dry. Stuff the chicken with remaining 4 garlic cloves, 8 sprigs of thyme, and quartered lemon. Once stuffed place the chicken on top of the vegetables. Using a basting brush cover the chicken with the melted butter. (Note: you can use olive oil if you prefer. i use the butter because it makes a nice golden crispy skin.) Then salt and pepper your chicken.
  3. Roast the chicken for an hour. Cover the chicken with aluminum foil and let sit for 20 minutes. I use a thermometer to make sure the chicken is at least 140 degrees before I cover and let it sit.

I adore making changes in my home but my budget does not always allow for large purchases. I find some of the biggest impacts can be more affordable items for your home. For instance changing up your styling on shelves, adding affordable home décor pieces, a rug or a new art print. With that in mind I decided to create a post for all my favorite Home Décor items which can make such a big statement in your home. My favorite types of home décor pieces are vases, jars, coffee table books, unique bowls with fillers, faux plants, decorative objects and candles. I really like decorating with jars and it is apparent as soon as you walk in my house. Blythe is my favorite color so I just adore any Ginger Jar. Matching Jars work perfect on a mantel, a set of jars can be arranged on any table top whether a dining table or a console. I also love to use them as a vase. They really are such a versatile Home Décor piece that anyone should be able to use them in their home. I included some more traditional jars above but I tried to find a few unique ones. I like shopping from small business too so most of these are from small shops.

Color and Textures are the two important aspects of design for me. I have chosen a neutral palette for my decorative objects but as you can tell there are lots of different textures. Wood, Cane, Marble Stone and Brass are all very versatile Home Décor pieces. I see all of these objects as great layering pieces for books, trays, bowls, stands or boxes. I want the brass keys to layer on top of some books I have on a small side table. I think the large chain set would look great on my coffee table either alone or hanging out of a bowl or tray. The Brass boxes would work great layered all together or just purchasing one to layer on a book or tray. Also the brass box could stand on its own on a bookshelf. The Candle votive and hurricanes could easily serve duel purposes as candle holders or vases. They work perfect inside or outside. The knots I love to layer on a books!

I think that bowls can easily be set out and not have any fillers in them. But I also love adding fillers to change things up and it is a very affordable item to add to any styling. The white stones with the raw edge teak bowl would be perfect on a coffee table or console table. I love the rattan bowl and artichokes for a kitchen island or table. The whitewashed bowl and moss I did in my own home and put it on my coffee table. I think the rope bowls are so unique and I adore pinecones. These pinecones are large so you will not need many. They are a little more then I usually spend on fillers so I may just purchase 2 or 3 and add in some real pinecones.

I do not have a green thumb so affordable faux plants is a must in my home. I tend to lean towards ferns because I enjoy decorating with flower stems so I really like greenery in my potted plants. However I do adore lavender so I had to add it to the list. I included the olive tree as well because I want it for my kitchen. I will either put it on my island or Kitchen table. In my opinion adding a plant always makes a room feel more homey and if you are like me and cannot manage to keep them alive faux is the way to go.

I layer books everywhere in my home so I have quit the collection of coffee table books. My husband and I are both big readers too so we have a lot of novels as well which I do tend to use in my home décor as well. We actually have so many books we had to put three boxes full of books in our attic because we had no more room.

500 MILES FROM YOU

I adore Jenny Colgan’s books because they are always great for a fun light read. If I am ever getting down I can always count on one of her books! I also love her books because many of them involve baking which is my second love! My husband can always tell when I have read one of her novels because I will be in the kitchen baking after I have finished reading. This book does not center around baking which is good for my waist line. It is a cute love story set in a small Scottish town and in London. As always, Jenny Colgan does such an incredible job describing the quaintness of the town so that I want to move there immediately. This is a quick read that is great for a sunny afternoon.

THE COTSWOLDS COOKERY CLUB

This is my idea of a perfect quick and light read. It is short and sweet! This book combines all of my favorite things…motherhood (with a sense of humor), reading, cooking, the Cotswolds, intimate group of new friends and a love story in the background. I must worn you Alice Ross leaves you hungry for all things Italy and longing for a cottage in the Cotswolds!

LOST LAKE

Sarah Addison Allen is another one of my favorite authors. She takes an ordinary small town and adds a touch of magic. I am not usually into books that have “magic” but Sarah Addison Allen does such an amazing job of creating a subtle almost believable magic that I can never put her books down. This book is not as light hearted as her other novels but is still a good read. It starts off with a death but the ending leaves you satisfied and whole again. I grew up going to lakes in the summer so this book hit close to home and brought me back to my own childhood. If you love a good book that will make you cry and then laugh this is the pick for you.

THE LAST MRS. PARRISH

I am not usually a “thriller” reader but I saw a review on another blog and decided to give it a try. It is suspenseful. I did find that I figured out the “twist” fairly early on. But I am glad I kept reading because the author throws in a fun more twist and turns to keep you glued to the book. This is definitely a moodier book so if you are looking for something light than this may not be it. I did actually read this at the beach but I was glad I had all that sunshine to help brighten my mood. The book ends on a happy note which is important to me. I either want a happy ending or one that leaves me feeling content.

I really got into the citrus this year! I not only got a faux plant, tree and stems but I also got a fun citrus print. I do love decorating with subtle color and I find the little pops of color from fruit to be just right.

My coffee table is one of my favorite spaces to change up. I enjoy finding new items but I like moving things around that I already own even better. Of course my husband prefers when I just use what I already own! I wanted to add some lighter tones to my coffee table for the summer so I went with all neutral pieces. There is nothing that says summer like Palm stems and sea shells. I found this great hurricane at Target and decided to use it as a vase instead. These cane hurricanes are so popular right now and I have seen them everywhere. I thought at $10 this was a great price! I also got this whitewashed wood bowl at Target. I already had some reindeer moss leftover from another project so I decided to keep my bowl filler simple by just adding the green moss. I love my little artichoke and have had it for years. I am often asked where I got it but it is no longer sold so I linked a similar one below. Of course I had to include a candle and this lemongrass smells amazing. Favorite Vases

I think Spring is such a wonderful time of year because the flowers are in bloom! I am a sucker for fresh flowers and I enjoy arranging them in fun vases, bowls, pitchers or planters. I think a vase of beautiful flowers makes a room feel brighter and happier. I especially like fresh flowers when we have guest whether they are just over for dinner or staying the night. My kids love sunflowers and often talk my husband into buying them when they are at the grocery store. My favorites are Hydrangeas, Peonies, Tulips and Orchids. Below I have included a wide selection of different vases that would suit most anyone’s style. I personally have a lot of white and blue vases but I am trying to venture out of my comfort zone. Decorating with a Clam Shell Bowl

My oversized clam shell bowl is one of my favorite décor pieces. I put it on my Friyay 5 list last week and had a question about how to style a clam shell bowl. I decided it would be fun to do a post with different styling ideas. Sometimes I like to keep it simple and leave my shell empty but I enjoy adding in fillers to change up my décor. My absolute favorite idea is to use Orchids and Moss which I have pictured above. I also added a close up shot of the orchids below. I usually start with a large oasis in the bottom of the clam or a foam board if that’s all I have. From there I can add my orchids or other faux flowers and greenery. I then add in my moss to cover any spots where you can see the oasis. In the Orchid picture above I actually have a mix of real orchids and faux (a trick from my mom). If I do not have enough height from just placing the oasis in the bottom of the shell then I will add some Target bags under the oasis. This way all the décor pieces can be seen and they sit above the edge of the shell. However, if I want to keep thigs quick and easy I simply add some decorative balls or orbs into the empty shell. You’d be surprised how good the orbs alone look but you can add in moss or eucalyptus to give more depth and color. I have a picture below where I used decorative orbs and some greenery. I used the same reindeer moss and moss orbs in both of my clam shell filler ideas.

ROUND MIRROR

This Mirror has such a beachy vibe to it. I adore all things rattan. This mirror is a great price too. I think this mirror would work great in an entryway. I was thinking of using it in my niece’s room which is all navy and white. It is not a large mirror so I was thinking of adding some fun hanging baskets with it. NAVY BEACH TOWEL

I have been planning our summer vacation recently so the beach has been on my mind! I purchased two of these towels and everyone in my family fights over them. I am going to have to order 2 more this year. They are large and my kids like to use them as a blanket. My sister in law loved them when I brought them with us to their lake house.

AFFORDABLE ART

I am always on the lookout for affordable art. I am very picky about my art and it is hard for me to find a lot of options that I really like. When I do find something I love I purchase it as long as it is in a reasonable price range. This piece is perfect for me because the colors are my favorite and I adore the beach! It gives me a calm and relaxed feeling which we could all use more of these days.

GIANT CLAM

I have this oversized clam shell in my family room and it is one of my favorite home décor items I own. During holidays I fill it with Christmas ornaments, flowers, eggs, greenery or whatever I can find. Unfortunately my kids and husband also like to hide there gaming accessories in my shell too. I am constantly putting away their things when I spot them in my shell.

SEA MIST

I have never tried this product before but I have seen it numerous times on other blogs. I think I will give it a try because I do not like to fix my hair when I am at the beach. I have naturally curly hair so I want to see if this helps. If it is effective then I may add it to my morning hair routine.

Laundry Room Makeover

Laundry Room Makeover

We have a small laundry room which was basically an empty room when we bought our home. Below you can see what our laundry room looked like before we got to work. I needed to add some shelving in order to organize this room. I also really needed a spot for drying some of our clothes. I considered cabinets but I have loved all the open shelving I have seen on Pinterest and Instagram. I am so glad we went with the shelving because it gave me a chance to add some fun items to our laundry room. Now I feel like our laundry room has a ton of storage and some personality!

I started by painting the laundry room Pure White by Sherwin Williams which really made the room feel larger. I then added this fun wallpaper which I got for an amazing price! I added the wallpaper because it brought so much personality to a plain room. I knew I would not be adding a lot of décor to the room so wanted to find a way to add detail without cluttering the room. My husband then built me these great shelves for under $30. I used the leftover Sherwin Williams Naval Paint from the entryway project on the shelves.

I knew I did not want to spend a lot of money on this makeover so I got this pretty print for $4 on Esty. I then got an affordable frame from Target (similar) and I already had this faux fern and planter from Target (similar). I also found this adorable paw print jar for Link’s treats! Now anytime we pop the top he comes running!

I tried out many different baskets from Target but ended up keeping these baskets. The tan striped soft sided laundry baskets are not only cute but very functional! They no longer have the striped tan but they do have other colors! I now have more then enough storage and have been able to move some items from my kitchen into the laundry room opening up lots of much needed space.

I found this drying rack for such a great price and have used it so often. I do think I am going to order one more for the other side. It can hold a lot but with two kids and the wash machine constantly running I think one more would be perfect!

THE RITZ-CARLTON AT LAKE OCONEE

I have had several friends visit this Ritz-Carlton for a long weekend and they all raved about it. We were planning to go this past fall but Covid changed our plans. The resort is in Georgia so it is drivable from Louisiana which is a plus. Once we are able to plan our trip again I will give a review!

NAVY BERRY BOWLS

I love these berry bowls! Of course anything blue will catch my eye but I also really like the cute patterns. My sister-in-law introduced me to berry bowls. She has some cute ones that she keeps in her refrigerator full of berries and grapes. She can then easily pull out for guest or for her family. I loved the idea because my son loves fruit especially blueberries and strawberries. When I get home from the grocery I like to wash his fruit and keep them in these bowls so he can easily grab them for snacks.

SANDALS

These are such cute sandals! I love sandals that I can just slide on and be on my way. I like the color combo and how the navy pops against the white. I plain to wear these with dresses and rolled jeans. I will be able to wear these to the office too which is a huge plus.

NAPKINS

As soon as I saw these napkins I knew I had to order them. I have seen similar napkins but they were way out of my price range so I was excited when I found these. I love to create fun tablescapes for Saturday Night dinners. We love eating outside in the spring so we will get a lot of use out of these!

HURRICANES

I have been on the hunt for rattan hurricanes that I could use for candles but also as a vase for flowers. I love any décor that serves a dual-purpose! When I saw these unique hurricanes I knew I had to add them to my must have list! Of course since they are navy they have to go to the top of the list.
